Video Game Deaths: Are you really a hero?

Hiroshi Sukarazaka wrote a light novel called, “All You Need Is Kill”. Despite the engrish sounding title, the novel is pretty great. It follows a soldier fighting in a war against aliens. After his initial death, he finds himself in a time loop. Very Groundhog Day-esque, but instead of becoming a better person, the protagonist becomes a better soldier. Each death is a learning experience for him, and each time time reverts he is a little more knowledgable of himself and his enemies. I loved it. Ate it up. The soldiers drive small mechs called “jackets” to fight the aliens. Fuck yeah.

But the reason I’m posting this is because the author’s afterword struck me as interesting. Sakurazaka stated that he got his inspiration for the novel from video games. Sakurazaka said he received no satisfaction from completing games, because he died several times along the way. The king would praise the hero, saying that the kingdom was saved only because of him. Well, of course, every time the hero died he was able to retry. Naturally, the hero would save the kingdom.

So in video games, how special is the main character? What justifies dying and retrying? Some games do this well, like Dark/Demons Souls, Kid Icarus, immortal characters, or characters that control time. But is Mario special when he saves the princess? Are the Hunters in Monster Hunter good because they can kill a towering beast in three tries? Is Snake the legendary soldier when he can load a checkpoint?

Logically this can all be explained. The “retry” in video games is a do over. To revert before the crisis. As if it never happened. Cannonly, Link saves Zelda without ever dying. Same with Mario. When the character dies, time is reverted to before the princess was doomed.

But role-playing games are the worst about this. Kefka goes God mode, destroys the party, game over. Then, time is reverted, and the characters grind for more EXP so they can kill Kefka. In Oblivion and Morrowind, you are a nobody, that becomes somebody. But how? Because you can do what the other NPCs can’t, revive from a save. These are games designed to immerse the player. You are a part of this world while you play. So at the end of the day, do you deserve to win?

Granted, this is a in depth look at entertainment. Yes, I understand that games wouldn’t be fun unless you could reload a save. I see the line between fantasy and reality. These are all just thought-provoking concepts after all. But ever since Sukarazaka planted these thoughts in my head with his writing, I find myself being less satisfied being a hero.

Holding out on the WiiU

As much shit as Nintendo gets from fans of other consoles and PC gaming, one truth is undeniable: Nine times out of ten, Nintendo knows how to set out and accomplish what it wants to. The 3DS had a rocky start, but is now leveling out with a growing library and 3DSXL coming out soon. Nintendo has plans though. The next console generation is coming, exciting players, developers, and journalist alike. Nintendo intends on striking first and securing sales before Microsoft and Sony have time to launch theirs.

Being honest, when the WiiU was announced, I was disappointed. I thought the gimmick of motion sensor consoles was over, and I wanted Nintendo to go back to the fond days of N64 and Gamecube. The WiiU is essentially the Wii2, seeing how controllers, and the many, many accessories are compatible with it. But now the console features a tablet-like controller (which many would disagree that it’s not a tablet, seeing how it has buttons. I argue that it’s in the shape of one, therefore, it is tablet-like.). This new controller is intended to work like the DS, providing an additional screen for maps and additional data. I’m just not sold by the concept yet. And lately first party Nintendo games have been a letdown. Skyward Sword took one step forward and two steps back, Mario 3D Land was good till you realized you can farm a thousand extra lives, and now the new Super Mario Brothers game features the collection of coins as a ground breaking game device. Ugh.

And no one seems to mention that Nintendo’s idea with the WiiU controller isn’t exactly unique. They have done it already with the GameBoy Advance/Gamecube connector cable. Now we have a more elaborated variation of it for the Wii.
“How does Nintendo keep doing it?!” I heard one journalist ask.
Bah.

Despite my gripes, bitching, and complaining, (as I’ve said before) Nintendo know’s their business. They are largely the most successful game company… ever. I find myself WANTING to be hyped up by the WiiU. No doubt it will be successful. I got to thinking that perhaps it is a lack of games that grip me.

Then I remembered something amazing.

Director Suda51 stated after the release of No More Heroes 2 that he was done with the current console generation. “Maybe for the next Nintendo console.”

The WiiU IS the next Nintendo console. Logically Suda51 should start planning the game right?

No More Heroes 1 & 2 are favorites of mine. I think no other gaming protagonist has struck me quite as cool as Travis Touchdown. An Otaku who discovered he yearned to fight tougher opponents. His weapon, the Beam Katana, is even a stylized variation of a weapon we’ve all seen time and time again. No More Heroes 2, along with Monster Hunter Tri, are the pinnacle of games I have played for the Wii. So maybe it will carry over to the WiiU?

Suda51 has said that Travis’s story has ended in NMH2, so NMH3 will likely feature a new character and tell his story. If Suda ever announces NMH3 for the WiiU, I think my hype meter might go off the charts. It would be a console seller for me instantly.

Vigil Unaccredited Staff (edited)

Many people think working for a big-name game developer is a dream come true, and perhaps it is, but sometimes stories comes from the developers that makes me cringe.

On a recent article of Destructoid, User Interface Designer Xander Davis used twitter to describe his poor working conditions for the three years three months he worked on Darksiders II. Long hours, sudden changes prior to shipping, poorly staffed, stifling deadlines. It’s all fascinating stuff.

This story reminds me of Zynga, the developer of the Farmville. Former employees of Zynga came forward to tell the terrible conditions which they had to work in.

You can read all of it here. Sorry if it’s linked to the mobile site, as I am still using my phone for everything.

(edit: I was misled from the article. Davis claims his life had been hell the last three years, but as Vigil Games General Manager David Adams’s email pointed out, Davis had only worked on Darksiders II for a total of 90 days. Adams also points out that employees terminated due to poor performance are not in the credits, which makes some sense.

So on one side, I believe Xander Davis had hard stipulations he had to work with due to releasing a AAA game with the development time of 2 1/2 years. It’d be hard for anyone. I also believe he was terminated due to poor performance (though this has been all but confirmed by Adams email to Destructoid). Davis was definitely acting out of anger, and his remarks seem a bit childish to me. But at the same time, no matter how minuscule your work is in a game, part of me thinks that you should receive some credit. So who’s to blame? Really no one. This is just another example of the dashing life of a game developer.)

FUTURE VIDJA GAEMS

The future. Some people are scared of it. Others are looking forward to it.
The summer of 2012 is pretty boring for games, outside of a few gems here and there, but what does the future have in store for us? These games paint vivid pictures, both of how advanced we get, and the threat of our creations. Three out of the five are new IPs, which is refreshing in this current marketplace of trilogies and ever-increasing sequels. Many of the trailers below come from gamescon 2012.

———————————————————————————————————————————————-

Watch Dogs

http://youtu.be/1U8KsQPIrY0

This video sets the stage and shows a world connected. Which will make watching the gameplay of the next trailer easier to understand what’s happening. Basically, Google has taken over the world. And, like, that shit is bad.

I think what stood out to me the most was the animations, and how alive and “filled” the world felt. That’s not even mentioning the cool and unique hacking powers. Anytime a baton is used to whoop ass, I’m sold. The only thing I’m worried about is how open the missions are. Do I have to hack cell phones to get into the building? Do I have to hack the streetlights to stop the cars?

And the multiplayer. I can’t wait to see more of that.
———————————————————————————————————————————————-

Remember Me

Remember Me is unfortunately be called a “futuristic Assassin’s Creed”. But is that necessarily a bad thing? I personally enjoyed Desmond and the near future world of Assassin’s Creed. My hope is eventually Desmond himself will don the hood and we’ll play as him in future New York. Remember Me to me blends Assassin’s Creed with the futuristic styling of Total Recall.

The game looks solid, but a little linear. It seemed like the game wanted the protagonist to go down the alleyway just to mind read the guard, then traverse to the one place she could remix the target’s mind. Is there any variation? I’m sold by the concepts and Ghost In The Shell cyberpunk edge, but I’m still skeptical about the game play.

———————————————————————————————————————————————-

The Last Of Us

Not all human advances are brilliant. In The Last Of Us, protagonist Joel and Ellie are just trying to survive in a post apocalyptic world, filled with fungal zombies. Yes, you read that right. Fungus. Zombies. I’m not sure if the fungal zombies are a great idea or not, but one thing is for sure, they are definitely scarier.

http://youtu.be/3yQn9KaPP2o

Lets say what everyone was thinking: Ellie looks like Ellen Page. Seems Ms. Page is the standard for “young tough girls that you must protect” seeing how she’ll be starring in the game Beyond: Two Souls as well.

That being said. The game play looks gritty, brutal, and real. I’m all for it. Ellie will be controlled by an AI, but developer Naughty Dog knows it’s stuff, and hopefully the game will be more than a brutal escort mission.

———————————————————————————————————————————————-

Lost Planet 3 & EX Troopers

I liked Lost Planet, and despite others, I enjoyed Lost Planet 2 and spent many hours goofing off with my friends in the multiplayer. Lost Planet 3 is being developed by Spark Unlimited instead of Capcom, and they seem to be focusing on the story, seeing how LP3 is a prequel to Lost Planet. Unlike 2, LP3 seems to focus on one character and his desperate struggle.  I’ll need to see more gameplay before I’m completely on board though.

If that’s not your thing, maybe you’ll enjoy EX Troopers.

http://youtu.be/aceyWT9u9Hw

EX Troopers is a Lost Planet spinoff featuring a color cast of characters and personality. All the goofiness of Lost Planet 2 seems to have distilled into this game. I love anime. I love over the top action. I love the manga inspired cutscenes and visuals. I’m even digging the jetpack gameplay. What bothers me is the main character’s mismatched appearance and blocky torso. Did you notice the running animation? It’s horrendous. Something about the shoulders just seems off.

That being said, I really want this game to be good.

———————————————————————————————————————————————-

So there we have it, five games that take place in the future. Some seem extravagant, some seem bleak. But for the future of video games, I’d say the future looks bright.

August 28 Vita Will Be Able To Play PS1 Titles

According to Sony at Gamescom, August 28th the Vita will finally be able to play original PlayStation titles.

This feature was announced way back when, but Sony has been very hush-hush about it.

As an owner of a Vita, I’m pretty excited about this, as it’s something I’ve been waiting for. My Vita has been collecting dust until I started Gravity Rush last week. I’m looking forward to carrying around my Vita more and play classics like Final Fantasy VII, Chrono Cross, and Legend of Dragoon.

Revival

First off, please forgive any grammatical or spelling errors, as I’m sure there are a lot of them. I’m posting from my phone.

My last post was just under a year ago. I’ve ditched this blog and went on with my life.

But I love writing, and I love video games. Writing about video games is what I want to do for the rest of my life. So why did I stop posting in this blog?

Part of the reason is because I joined pshomegazette.com. They were looking for new writers (still looking, if anyone is interested) and I wanted to write. Though I didn’t write as much as I thought I could. PSHome Gazette is a great group with wonderful people. The owners really made me feel welcome, and that my writing was good, for the few pieces I wrote. But PSHome Gazette churns out the best articles on everything PlayStation Home related. I, however, do not really play Home often… or at all for that matter. So even if they wanted me to post non-home related articles, after a while I stopped feeling like I should write them altogether. Even if I did think of an article, I’d quickly dismiss it, thinking that it wasn’t professional enough. I didn’t want to spam unprofessional articles. Or maybe I’m just making excuses, and trying to validate why I feel I let down the owners who so graciously took me into their community.

But I want to write in my voice. I want a place to talk about the video games I play and rumors and news that I read. I don’t want to care if it relates to Sony or Home. So I’m posting again in this blog I left to collect dust. Even if no one reads it.

And even though I’m bringing this back, I still want to be apart of pshomegazette.com. The community I feel is like a family. We’re all writers that love video games. And I would still love to be apart of them.

If ever I post something that I want to explore further, or more in-depth, I’ll likely do it on their website. Similarly, if they need me to write or preview/review something, I’ll more than happily agree.

Man, I must feel sappy today.
Feels great to be writing again.

Uncharted and Subway make horrible commercials

For the month of October, Naughty Dog and Subway have teamed up and are running a promotion where, if you buy a specially marked Uncharted subway cup, you get a code you can put into Subway’s website and receive another code that you put into the PSN, which allows you to play the multiplayer of Uncharted 3 early.

Although it’s a hassle to put in a code, just to get a another code to put in, the whole idea is a huge success. Before, I would only go to subway if the mood hit me, but now there’s incentive to go. How many other lunch meals allows you to unlock a good chunk of a game early? And if you get the same cups, you unlock other rewards and in-game cash.

But then I saw the commercial, and I felt deep in my heart’s brain embarrassed for Naughty Dog. It begs the question: Do you have THE TASTE FOR ADVENTURE?!

After seeing that, you’re either laughing, or embarrassed at such blatant product placement. (For the record, the funnest parts were when Drake was falling out of a plane, but still made it a priority to catch his drink, and at the end with the badly photoshopped sub and drink. OUCHHH!)

Naughty Dog… tsk tsk… It’s bad enough that you’re basically selling out, putting in-game subway shirts and hats, and making subway coins “treasures” but there’s no reason to whore out the now-iconic protagonist.

But after all that is said in done, Naughty Dog and subway still managed to pull off product placement better than most of everyone else, and you can bet I’ll be playing more of the multiplayer, and buying the cups so I can get a code to get a code.

Be sure to keep checking Game Over, You Suck for more posts. If, of course, you have the TASTE FOR ADVENTURE!

Dark Souls overview

Take a deep breath. Hear that groaning down the hallway? The whispers of impending doom around every corner? Feel the sense of dread, knowing you may not be prepared for what’s through that next door?

This is Dark Souls.

Without bogging you down with pretext, Dark Souls is the spiritual successor to Demon’s Souls for the PS3, which is arguably one of the hardest games for the PS3, at least at the time of its release. There’s speculation that the reason Dark Souls is not considered “Demon’s Souls 2” is because of a publishing problem, but I’ve yet to find solid evidence of this.

Dark Souls continues to be one of the hardest, unfair, time-consuming, and mentally exhausting gaming experiences I’ve had yet.

What makes it unfair? Well, like Demon’s Souls, every enemy you kill gives you it’s soul in a numerical value. These souls serve as both experience points for leveling, and currency for the merchants that always seem few and far between. When you die, and you will die, from the hordes of enemies that exist only to kill you, you drop these souls. Dark Souls extends this by throwing in a new variable: humanity.

In Dark Souls, you exist in four different forms; Alive, Hallow, White Phantom, and Black Phantom. Alive is what you’ll strive to be, as you receive a stat bonus, increased item drop rate, and the ability to summon white phantoms. When you die, you come back as a Hollow, an undead husk of a human, and getting back to being human through humanity is your main goal.  You can do this by placing down a white soapstone mark, allowing another player to summon you and make you a white phantom in their world. It’s not that simple though, in order to gain humanity, you must aid the player who summoned you in killing a boss. Or if you don’t want to help someone, when you’re human, you can invade other alive player’s game to steal their souls and humanity by killing them. It’s a very interesting and well made system, as deaths serve not only to punish you, but, as many people will point out, to force you to learn from your mistakes.

I’m nearing thirty hours into the game, and I love it. As hard as this game is, it’s hard for a reason. Most games fail to reach the true sense of scale and consequences that Dark Souls encompasses. Some games might put you against a huge hydra with repeating attacks and AI, yet it towers above you and you might even feel the scale, but then you realize that the arena you fight it in has a convenient ballista located barely inside the hydra’s attack radius. Dark Souls doesn’t have this. At one point, you see such a massive hydra in the background and, most likely, you’ll run around it because it will kill you dead. This isn’t rare in Dark Souls.

Next post I’ll share some tips I found for those interested in braving this game’s challenges.

Continue checking frequently for updates!

Press Start

“Wow. That looks cool.” My Dad said, giving the TV screen a half glance. I was four years old, living with my Dad in our blue and white trailer. If I wasn’t there, I was at my grandma’s. Either place I visited, I played video games.

At home, it was the Super Nintendo, at my Grandma’s, it was the Sega Genesis. At the time, I was playing an arcade port of a small, now cult classic, game called Primal Rage. Both my Dad and I could appreciate a game where you play as dinosaurs that beat the shit out of each other.

Since then, I’ve continued to play video games almost daily. Though my Dad never really played video games, he still seems to admire them, and he helps my little brother build his game collection via internet deals and yard sales.

Games are a part of my life, and instead of getting over them and moving onto more productive things, I’ve decided it was time I start validating my lifestyle and do the trendy thing by writing a blog. As you might have noticed, the page is currently under development, and is pretty bleak. I’ll try to do something about it. Until then, stay tuned.

And who knows? It could rock. Could suck ass.

Coming up I’ll be blogging about my deaths adventures in the world of Dark Souls, as well as a Personal Bests post, which chronicles my favorite games in various categories.
